Black-crowned Night-Heron
Nycticorax nycticorax
Synopsis: Breeds locally east of the Cascades and perhaps at one or two locations west of the Cascades. Notable are the May and June records from the Willamette Valley and southern Oregon coast.

Habitat Associations:
strongest
Lake/Pond Shoreline & Islands (382433 acres)
Streamside/Wetland Shrubland (500 acres)
Edges of Freshwater Marsh (15870 acres)

Relative Detectability: Moderately easy to see, but nocturnal habits of many birds complicate detection. Colonies also difficult to find, due to location in dense trees or tall vegetation growing in marshes.

Challenge: Determine if species still nests in the Willamette Valley and in Deschutes, Crook, Grant, and Baker Counties.
